Relationship Counselling in Coquitlam, BC

Relationship and couples counselling for partners who want to understand each other deeply, communicate better, and find their way back to each other.
In-person couples therapy in Coquitlam, BC, & online across British Columbia. All relationships are welcome here.

How did we get here?

You used to talk for hours. Now dinner is mostly talking about logistics, and then you both reach for your phones. The same argument comes around every few weeks, and neither of you can remember who started it or what it was even about. One of you goes silent, the other pushes harder, or you’ve both gone quiet. Mostly, you just miss enjoying each other’s company.

In relationship counselling, we'll slow things down enough to hear what's underneath it all, so you can find your way back to each other.

Deeper connection is possible.

What Is Relationship Counselling & When Does It Help?

Relationship counselling is a space where partners can say the hard things with someone in the room who isn't taking sides.

It’s less about deciding who’s right and more about understanding why the same conversation keeps going the same way.

You don’t need to be in crisis to come. Plenty of couples arrive with something specific, like a betrayal, parenting issue, or a decision they can’t get past. Plenty of others arrive because things have slowly drifted and neither person wants to wait until things get worse.

All relationships are welcome here. We work with 2SLGBTQIA+ couples, polyamorous and non-monogamous partners, blended families, and anyone whose relationship doesn’t come with a standard template.

How To Tell If Counselling Might Help

Do any of these sound familiar?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, it may be time to consider therapy for couples.

Match With a Couples Therapist in Coquitlam, BC

We work with a lot of thoughtful, creative, funny people: older teens and young adults, queer and trans folks, neurodivergent brains, and anyone who’s felt a bit out of place in a traditional therapy room. Bringing your relationship into a room with a stranger takes some nerve. We’ll make it as comfortable as we can.

What Relationship Counselling Can Help You Work Through

We’ll name the patterns that keep tripping you up, like stonewalling, interrupting, or shutting down, and practice new ways of saying what you need and listening without getting defensive.

Work through what broke, build some transparency and accountability back in, and lay a foundation of safety and honesty you can both stand on.

If there’s emotional or physical distance between you, we’ll take small, intentional steps toward finding each other again.

Some couples fight. Others avoid it entirely and let things pile up in the background. Both are workable and worth looking at.

A space to talk about family planning, look at where your different parenting instincts come from, find the values you share, and figure out how to present a united front to your child or teen.

Merging two families comes with loyalties, histories, and logistics nobody warned you about. We’ll help you sort through it together.

Moves, new jobs, a baby, an empty house, a loss. We’ll help you renegotiate roles and expectations, and understand what the change has been like for each of you.

Sometimes the question is whether to stay. We’ll explore what each of you needs, what has and hasn’t worked, and what a healthy future looks like, together or apart.

How We Work In Relationship Counselling

All of our couples therapists bring something a little different into the room, and the work gets shaped around the two of you.

We use approaches like:

Gottman work is built on decades of research into what keeps couples together. It gives us practical ways to handle conflict, rebuild friendship, and spot the patterns that erode connection over time.

EFFT looks at the emotions underneath the argument, and at the attachment needs driving them. Often the fight about the dishes turns out to be about something else entirely.

Relational work focuses on the space between you: how you each show up, what you’re each protecting, and how those two things collide.

CBT helps you catch the assumptions you’ve each built up about the other, and check them against what’s actually happening.

DBT brings practical skills for the moments a conversation heats up faster than either of you can manage.

Sometimes what’s happening between you has roots further back into trauma, in one or both of your histories. EMDR can help with that, individually, alongside the couples work.

The strongest relationships aren't the easiest ones. They're the tended ones.

What Life Can Look Like From Here

With time, consistency, and effort in couples counselling, you and your partner(s) may start to notice:

The Nook

A nook is a small, tucked-away spot where you can settle in and stay a while. That’s the whole idea.

Warm lamps instead of fluorescents, plants in every corner, and a seat that’s easy to sink into.

Questions About Relationship Counselling

Usually together. Your couples therapist in Coquitlam may suggest an individual session with each of you early on, to hear each person’s history and perspective without the other in the room, and then the work continues jointly.

If something comes up that’s better addressed individually, your therapist will talk that through with you both first. Nothing gets decided without you.

That’s a common starting point, but it doesn’t mean the work can’t begin.

We can start with individual sessions focused on the relationship, and often the other partner joins once they see something shifting at home. We won’t push them, and we won’t sit around waiting either. There’s plenty you can do on your own that changes the dynamic between you. Book a free consult to learn about how we work together and individually.

Not at all. We work with couples at every stage: dating, engaged, married, long-distance, living apart, and long-term partners who’ve never wanted the paperwork.

We also work with couples who are separating, and with people figuring out whether they want to.

Yes! Inclusivity is one of the values this practice was built on. In therapy for relationships, we work with queer and trans partners, polyamorous and non-monogamous relationships, and relationship structures that don’t fit a standard shape.

You shouldn’t have to spend your first session explaining your relationship before you can start talking about it. We’d rather you didn’t have to.

No. That’s not what we’re there for, and it wouldn’t help either of you anyway.

Your therapist’s job is to understand what’s happening for both of you, including the bits that are hard to say out loud. That sometimes means naming a pattern one partner won’t love hearing about. That’s different from picking a winner.

We can’t answer that, and we’d be wary of anyone who claims they can after one look at you.

What we can say is that plenty of couples arrive convinced they’ve left it too long and find there’s more between them than they thought. Others realize that separating is the kinder path, and couples counselling helps them do that with more care.

Yes. Some of the most useful counselling happens when a couple isn’t sure which way things are going.

At The Nook Counselling, we’ll look at what each of you needs, what’s already been tried, and what a healthy future looks like, whether that’s together or apart. If you do separate, doing it thoughtfully matters, particularly when there are kids involved.

Often, yes. Recurring arguments usually aren’t about the surface topic, which is why solving the surface topic never ends them.
In relationship counselling, we slow the argument down enough to see the pattern: who moves toward, who moves away, what each of you is protecting. Once you can both see it happening in real time, it starts to lose some of its grip. Book a free consult to begin.

It depends on what you’re working through and how long it’s been going on, so we won’t give you a number that may not hold true for you.

Some couples come for a handful of sessions with something specific in mind. Others stay longer, particularly when there’s been a breach of trust or years of built-up patterns. Your Coquitlam couples therapist will check in regularly about how it’s going, and you set the pace together.

Look for therapists who name couples work as a focus and who have training in relationship-specific approaches like the Gottman Method or EFT, since couples work is genuinely different from individual therapy.

If you’d like some help with that part, book a free consult with our Client Care Coordinator. She’ll ask what you’re both looking for, what you’d like support with, and what has or hasn’t worked before. From there, she’ll recommend the relationship therapist on our team she thinks would be the best fit for you.

Still have questions? We’d love to hear from you!
