ADHD Counselling in Coquitlam, BC

Therapy that works with how your brain is wired, helping you find systems that make sense for your busy mind.
In-person ADHD therapy for teens (15+) and adults in Coquitlam, BC, & online across British Columbia.

Why does the easy stuff feel so hard for me?

You’ve been back in the house three times already. First the keys, then your lunch, then the package you put by the door specifically so you wouldn’t forget it. You forgot it.

And that’s before you’ve even got to the list. The assignment’s due tomorrow, and somehow you’ve decided to give the kitchen a deep clean instead. There are eleven things on your task list; they all feel equally urgent, and you’ve started none of them.

In ADHD counselling, we'll build tools that fit how your brain works, so the hard days get a little easier.

Easier is possible.

What Is ADHD Counselling & How Does It Help?

ADHD is a difference in how your brain handles attention, time, and motivation.

It isn’t about not trying hard enough. It’s about a brain that runs on interest and urgency rather than importance, which is why you can hyperfocus for six hours on something that grabs you and lose an entire afternoon to a task you genuinely care about.

ADHD shows up differently depending on the person. Inattentive, hyperactive, or a mix of both. For some, it’s the restlessness everyone can see. For others, it’s an inner buzzing nobody notices, because you’ve spent years getting very good at hiding it.

But here’s what people don’t always realize: That same wiring is often where the good stuff comes from: The creativity, the empathy, the ability to go all in on something that matters to you.

Counselling can help you work with your brain instead of against it, so that wiring starts to feel less like a flaw and more like a superpower. Understanding how you’re built is where that starts.

How To Tell If ADHD Is Showing Up

Do any of these sound familiar?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, it may be time to consider ADHD therapy.

Match With an ADHD Therapist in Coquitlam, BC

We work with a lot of thoughtful, creative, funny people: older teens and young adults, queer and trans folks, neurodivergent brains, and anyone who’s felt a bit out of place in a traditional therapy room. Several of us have ADHD ourselves, and some of us have done additional training in it. Either way, you won’t need to explain what it’s like.

Our room is built with sensory stuff in mind: warm lamps instead of overhead lighting, a fidget box, tea if you want it, and walk and talk sessions when sitting still isn’t happening today.

What ADHD Counselling Can Help You Work Through

For the tasks that sit untouched for weeks. We’ll build approaches that work with how your attention actually moves, rather than against it.

Late again, back in the house again, assignment in at the last possible minute again. Therapy can help you build systems that hold up on the days your brain won’t cooperate.

When eleven things all feel equally urgent, nothing gets started. We’ll work on how to find the first step and take it.

That constant sense of urgency and buzzing under your skin, whether or not anyone else can see it. We work with the physical side of ADHD too.

When bedtime is when everything gets loud, ADHD counselling can help you find a way to actually land at the end of the day.

Lazy. Careless. Too much. Not living up to your potential. You’ve been hearing versions of that for years, and it’s worth unpacking together.

Years of keeping it together on the outside costs an enormous amount. If you’ve hit the wall, we’ll figure out how you got there and what recovery looks like.

When feelings arrive at full volume and take a while to settle, we’ll build practical tools you can actually use in the moment.

ADHD, anxiety, and depression travel together so often it’s closer to the norm than the exception. We’ll look at all of it, rather than one piece in isolation.

Interrupting, forgetting what was said, missed deadlines, frustrated colleagues. We’ll work on the ripple effects too, not just what’s happening in your head.

How We Work In ADHD Counselling

Everyone on our team brings something a little different into the room, and your ADHD therapist will shape the work around you. Expect it to be practical and skills-focused. Every therapist here works a bit differently, and what we use depends on your unique circumstances.

We use approaches like:

CBT helps you challenge the beliefs that built up over years of feedback about being lazy, messy, or not applying yourself. Beliefs you’ve probably stopped questioning.

DBT brings mindfulness and slowing down into the picture, plus real skills for the moments when emotions arrive faster than you can handle them. This is where most of the practical skills come from: what to do when emotions hit harder than you can manage, how to get through a bad moment without making it worse, and how to ask for what you need.

Narrative work helps you step back from the stories you’ve collected about what your struggles mean, and sort out which parts you want to keep.

ACT helps you work with your brain as it is, and spend your energy on what matters to you instead of fighting yourself.

When there are harder experiences sitting underneath, whether tied to ADHD or not, EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories that got stuck.

Alongside the therapy, we’ll build strategies for the everyday stuff: the keys, the deadlines, the list that never gets shorter.

You've spent years being told to try harder. The effort was never missing. It was just going somewhere nobody could see.

What Life Can Look Like From Here

With time, consistency, and effort in ADHD therapy, here’s what you may start to notice:

The Nook

A nook is a small, tucked-away spot where you can settle in and stay a while. That’s the whole idea.

Warm lamps instead of fluorescents, plants in every corner, and a seat that’s easy to sink into.

Questions About ADHD Counselling

No, you don’t need a diagnosis to access counselling.

A formal diagnosis can be helpful for understanding your experience, but it isn’t a requirement. Many people come to therapy suspecting they may have ADHD, or simply knowing that something feels off and they need support.

Counselling can be helpful at any stage, whether you’re pre-diagnosis, newly diagnosed, or have known about your ADHD for years. Book a free consult to learn more about how therapy can help.

Executive functioning is the set of mental skills that handle planning, prioritizing, starting tasks, managing time, holding information in your working memory, and switching between things. It’s the part of your brain that runs the show behind the scenes.

With ADHD, executive function tends to work inconsistently rather than not at all, which is why you can hyperfocus for six hours on one thing and be completely unable to start another. Executive dysfunction is why “just make a list” has never solved this for you. Much of ADHD counselling is about building executive functioning support that works with your brain instead of against it.

ADHD therapy is tailored to how your busy brain works. It tends to be more practical and skills-focused alongside the emotional support that all good therapy provides.

Sessions are structured with your specific challenges in mind: executive functioning, time blindness, emotional regulation, organization, and the self-esteem that takes a hit after years of struggling with all of it.

Counselling and medication are different tools that work in different ways. Medication can help manage certain symptoms, while counselling addresses the emotional, behavioural, and relational impact of ADHD.

Many people find the two work well together, and counselling can also be effective on its own. Your therapist will never pressure you toward or away from medication. That decision is always yours, made with your medical professionals.

Absolutely. A good ADHD therapist understands that a traditional 50-minute sit-down session doesn’t suit every brain.

Sessions can be adapted to keep things engaging. You won’t be judged for losing your train of thought, going off on a tangent, or needing to move around. We have a fidget box in the room and offer walk and talk sessions for this very reason. This is a practice designed with your needs in mind.

Yes. ADHD very commonly occurs alongside anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges, so much so that it’s considered the norm rather than the exception.

Your ADHD therapist will take a holistic view of your wellbeing and work with all aspects of what you’re experiencing, not the ADHD in isolation. If at any point your needs fall outside the scope of counselling, your therapist will discuss this with you, and together you can develop a plan to connect you with additional support.

Absolutely, and this is one of the most common reasons adults reach out.

Masking means suppressing or hiding your natural responses, or who you are, in order to appear “normal,” and it takes an enormous amount of energy over time. ADHD burnout can leave you feeling completely depleted, emotionally flat, and unable to function in ways you previously could.

ADHD counselling can help you recognize the signs of masking and burnout, and understand why you developed those patterns in the first place.

Yes. Navigating a child’s ADHD diagnosis, or the process of seeking one, can be stressful and emotionally complex for the whole family.

ADHD counselling can support parents in understanding their child’s or teen’s needs, managing their own feelings of worry or guilt, and developing more effective and compassionate ways of communicating at home. It can also help siblings who may feel overlooked and give the child a space to feel heard and understood.

ADHD is often a family experience, and support for the whole family can make a real difference. Please note that we see clients aged 15 and up.

Very. A late diagnosis often brings relief and grief at the same time: relief at finally having an explanation, and grief for the years spent thinking you were the problem.

Adult ADHD in women and men is often missed in childhood, particularly in females, in people with the inattentive presentation, and in anyone who did well enough at school to fly under the radar. ADHD therapy gives you somewhere to put all of that, alongside the practical work of figuring out what helps now that you know what you’re working with.

Look for therapists who name ADHD as a focus and who talk about both the practical side, things like executive functioning and daily systems, and the self-worth side, since ADHD affects both.

If you’d like some help with that part, book a free consult with our Client Care Coordinator. She’ll ask about what you’re looking for, what you’d like support with, and what has or hasn’t worked for you in therapy before. From there, she’ll recommend the ADHD therapist on our team she thinks would be the best fit for you.

Still have questions? We’d love to hear from you!
