Teen Counselling in Coquitlam, BC

Therapy for teens (15+) and young adults who are carrying more than they let on at home, at school, and with the people around them.
In-person teen therapy in Coquitlam, BC, & online across British Columbia.

When did everything get so complicated?

Everyone keeps asking what you’re doing after graduation, and you’ve stopped having an answer. It feels easier to avoid that assignment you haven’t started, because every time you think about it your stomach turns. Something’s shifted in your friend group, so you’re replaying what might have happened at midnight instead of sleeping. Then someone asks how you’re doing, and you the easiest answer is “fine,” because explaining it all feels too overwhelming.

In teen counselling, we'll untangle it one piece at a time, until it starts to feel manageable.

Confidence is possible.

What Is Teen Counselling & How Can It Help?

Being a teenager is a lot.

There’s pressure coming from every direction at once: figure out your future, keep your grades up, manage friendships, handle whatever your family’s got going on, and, while you’re at it, look like you’ve got it all together on social media.

That’s a lot to hold. It often turns into self-doubt, anxiety, low mood, pushing yourself too hard or shutting down completely, or reaching for distractions that aren’t always healthy.

Adolescent brains are also still developing, which means feelings genuinely land harder at this age. Counselling gives all that intensity somewhere to go, and gives your teen tools to use out in the real world.

How To Tell If Teen Counselling Might Help

Do any of these sound familiar?

If you or your teen nodded at any of these, it might be worth talking to a teen therapist.

What Counselling Can Help Your Teen Work Through

We help teens pinpoint what’s driving the worry and build calming strategies they can use, whether that’s before a test, in a crowded hallway, or at midnight when they can’t sleep.

School, expectations, and the constant question of what happens after graduation. Teen counselling gives them somewhere to set it all down for an hour, sort through what’s urgent, and take some of the pressure off.

Some teens can’t get started, and others can’t stop pushing. We look at what’s underneath the pattern, whether that’s avoidance, perfectionism, or burnout, and build approaches that work with how their brain runs.

In ADHD support, we help teens build strategies suited to how they’re wired. The focus is on practical systems plus the self-worth that takes a hit along the way.

Persistent low mood, isolation, or not caring about things they used to love can be hard to witness in your teen. Counselling offers space to explore those feelings, challenge the negative thinking underneath them, and rebuild a sense of purpose.

For teens who feel flooded by anger, frustration, or sadness, we teach self-awareness and regulation skills so they can respond rather than react. That tends to ease things at home and build their confidence.

Friend groups shift, people change, and a breakup can take up more room than anyone expected. We help teens make sense of what’s happening, work out what they need from the people around them, and navigate it with more steadiness.

When the same argument keeps repeating, or your teen has stopped bringing things up at all, we work on communication from both directions. The goal is a home where everyone feels heard.

Starting high school, finishing it, deciding whether to pursue post-secondary, work, or a gap year. We help teens sort through what they want without the pressure of having it all figured out, and settle into change more gently.

When thoughts about appearance follow them through the day and take up more space than they should, we look at where those beliefs came from and help build a steadier relationship with how they see themselves.

Everyone finds ways to get through. When those ways start costing more than they help, we work on replacing them with coping skills that hold up under pressure.

When something that happened still hasn’t settled, it can be hard to move forward. We go at your teen’s pace, and they decide what gets talked about and when.

How We Work In Teen Counselling

Every therapist here works a bit differently, and what we use depends on your teen and what they’re facing.

Some of the approaches we draw on include:

Teenage brains make fast judgements all day, and some of them are harsh. CBT helps your teen catch those thoughts and check whether they hold up, rather than believing them by default.

This is where most of the practical skills come from: what to do when emotions hit harder than they can manage, how to get through a bad moment without making it worse, and how to ask for what they need.

Most teens pick up a story about themselves somewhere along the way. Narrative work helps them step back, look at it properly, and decide which parts they agree with.

Some feelings don’t go away just because you want them to. ACT helps your teen make room for hard emotions without letting them dictate what happens next.

Sometimes a teen doesn’t need the whole backstory unpacked, they just need this week to be less rough. Solution-focused work starts with what’s already going okay and builds from there.

When family dynamics are part of the picture, EFFT brings everyone into the work, so your teen isn’t carrying it alone.

When trauma or something heavier is sitting underneath it all, EMDR helps your brain process memories that got stuck. You don’t have to tell the whole story for it to work.

Our Approach

How Our Teen Counselling Works

Step 1: Begin Together

The first session includes parents for the first few minutes, so everyone hears the same explanation of how confidentiality works. Parents are always welcome to pass along what they're noticing.

Step 2: Make It Yours

After that, sessions are one-on-one with teens. This is their space to say whatever they need to. Anything shared with parents beyond that, like a skill we’ve been working on so they can back teens up at home, only happens with the teen’s consent.

Step 3: Strengthen & Recover

Step by step, we build tools teens can use at school and at home. Parents can meet separately to hear what they're hoping for, if the teen's comfortable with it, and other family members can work with someone else on our team.

Getting through it isn't the same as being okay, and you deserve better than getting through.

The Nook

A nook is a small, tucked-away spot where you can settle in and stay a while. That’s the whole idea.

Questions About Teen Counselling

Counselling gives your teen a space that’s entirely theirs. No judgement, nobody trying to fix them or tell them what to do.

Their therapist can help them make sense of big feelings, work out what’s sitting underneath the stress or anxiety, and build tools for school pressure, friendships, family conflict, or the sense of being overwhelmed by everything at once.

Because emotions land more intensely at this stage of development, counselling gives all of that somewhere to go, along with ways to handle it out in the real world.

That’s up to your teen. We usually start the first session by going through confidentiality together with parents, but after that, sessions can be one-on-one or together.

If your teen wants you there to help explain something, to work on family things, or just for support, that’s completely fine too. It’s their call, and their therapist will check in about what they’re comfortable with.

Sessions run about 50 minutes. Mostly it’s a conversation. Your therapist will ask questions, you’ll talk through what’s been going on, and you’ll usually leave with something to try. Some sessions are heavy, some are pretty ordinary, and a few are even funny. You can also do it walking outside if sitting in a room isn’t your thing.

That’s okay. Your teen therapist will help guide the conversation and ask questions to get things moving.

It’s completely fine to say “I don’t know what to talk about today.” Sometimes that sentence opens up something worth exploring on its own. You’re not being graded on how prepared you are.

Fit matters a lot in teen counselling, and not clicking with one person or one approach doesn’t mean counselling isn’t for you. Different therapists work in different ways, some more talk-based, some more skills-based like CBT or DBT, and some working with what’s held in the body. Sometimes it’s about finding the right person, or the right time.

We see teens from 15 and up, along with young adults. Natalie works with clients 18 and over. If your teen is younger than 15, we’re happy to point you toward someone who might be a better fit.

If you’re noticing changes in their behaviour, habits, or mood, and you want them to have support learning tools to manage their emotions, cope with stress, and understand themselves better, working with a teen counsellor can help with that.

You don’t need to have it diagnosed or figured out first. Sometimes “Something seems off, and I’d like them to have somewhere to talk,” is reason enough.

In British Columbia, the Infants Act allows people under 19 to consent to counselling and other healthcare as a “mature minor,” as long as the treatment is in their best interest and they understand what it involves, including the risks and benefits.

Beyond that, the usual rules of confidentiality apply. What your teen talks about in session stays between them and their therapist, and won’t be shared without their consent unless:

  • There’s a substantial risk of serious imminent harm to themselves.
  • There’s a substantial risk of serious imminent harm to someone else.
  • There’s a need to protect an identifiable minor or vulnerable adult, consistent with applicable law.
  • It’s required by law, such as a court subpoena.

Their therapist will go through all of this with you and your teen at the start, so everyone knows where things stand before you begin.

Mostly, you’re the person who gets them there and keeps things steady at home.

You’re welcome to share what you’re noticing with their therapist at any point, even though they can’t share back. With your teen’s consent, their therapist can pass along things you can support at home, like a skill they’ve been practising. Beyond that, the most useful thing is usually giving them room to have this be theirs, and not asking too many questions after each session.

Search for therapists who name teen counselling as a focus, and who talk about how they build trust with young people rather than just listing conditions.

If you’d like some help with that, book a free consult with our Client Care Coordinator. She’ll ask what you’re looking for, what you’d like support with, and what has or hasn’t worked before, and recommend the therapist on our team she thinks would fit best.

Still have questions? We’d love to hear from you!
