Counselling For Teens (15+)
in Coquitlam, BC
Being A Teenager Isn’t Easy…
Teens these days (and in general) are under so much pressure to:
Figure out their future
Do well in school
Live with hormonal changes
Navigate friendships
Manage peer pressure
Maintain family relationships in a time of change
Not be bombarded by pressure from social media
… and the list goes on!
Living with all of these factors can lead to struggles with self-doubt, negative self-talk, judgment towards self and others, anxiety, depression, over and under-functioning, risk-taking behaviour, stress and overwhelm, conflict in relationships, and turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Our team at The Nook Counselling in Coquitlam are dedicated to supporting youth age 15 and older to feel better equipped to manage what’s coming up in order to live more meaningful and fulfilled lives.
What Should I Expect As A Teen In Counselling?
The work always starts with building comfort and trust in the therapeutic relationship. Once you’re feeling more comfortable or ready to share, it will be helpful for us to know more about what’s been going on and what brings you to counselling.
Our biggest priority is being an inclusive practice. This means we welcome people of all cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities.
As we learn more about you and the context, we can start working on a plan together.
Often this can include developing tools and techniques to try when out in the real world. This might look like:
Noticing thought patterns and learning to challenge and re-frame them to new ways of thinking. This, over time, can help to re-frame your outlook on difficult situations that may arise
Learning about and practicing new coping skills so manage things like emotional distress, overwhelm, and communication struggles
Practicing ways of showing up and/ or responding in situations that feel hard and intimidating
Planning for challenging circumstances so you feel more prepared to face them on your own
We are flexible with our counselling sessions and want you to feel comfortable. If you feel more comfortable with a parent or loved on in the room, we are more than happy to see you and them together. We also can do walk and talk sessions if you prefer to be in nature, outside of an office setting.
