Why can’t I turn my brain off for even a minute?
You’ve replayed the same two-minute conversation from Monday about eleven times now. You’ve drafted the text, deleted it, and drafted it again.
You can’t remember the last time you fell asleep without a full debrief first, or made a phone call without a rehearsed script. You long to sit at dinner with your family or friends and be fully there, instead of half-watching yourself from across the table.
In anxiety counselling, we'll get curious about what your mind is working so hard to protect you from, and what it would take to ease up. Being present is something you can build toward.
Calm is possible. .

What Is Anxiety & How Do I Know If I Have It?
Anxiety is your brain scanning for danger.
It runs the what-ifs, rehearses the conversation, and keeps you braced for something that usually never arrives. In small doses, that’s useful. When it never clocks off, it wears you down.
For some people it’s a low hum of worry that’s always running underneath everything. For others it arrives in waves that knock the wind out of them. It might have started in childhood, or crept in during a breakup, a job change, or a year where everything moved at once.
Anxiety usually means you care about doing it right, about the people you love, and about what comes next. That part of you doesn’t need to be silenced. It just needs the volume turned down.
How To Tell If Anxiety Is Showing Up
- Your thoughts speed up the second your head hits the pillow.
- Something bad feels like it's about to happen, with no evidence for it.
- Your chest tightens, your heart races, or your stomach turns before a conversation you've been dreading.
- Decisions take forever, because you’re scared you’ll choose the wrong one.
- Calls, plans, and rooms full of people are easier to dodge than to sit through.
- Even on a good day, switching off feels out of reach.
If you answered “yes” to any of these, it may be time to consider anxiety therapy.

What Anxiety Counselling Can Help You Untangle
Generalized Anxiety & Worry Thoughts
When your mind runs the what-ifs on a loop, anxiety therapy helps you spot the pattern, question it, and get some room back in your day.
Social Anxiety
For the rehearsing, the replaying, and the dread that builds before plans. Therapy for anxiety can make conversations feel less like something to get through.
Panic Attacks
When anxiety arrives all at once, we’ll work with what’s happening in your body and build a plan for the moments it takes the wheel.
The Physical Side of Anxiety
Racing heart, tight chest, shallow breathing, nausea, that buzzing feeling that won’t let you sit still. We work with the body as much as the thoughts.
Sleep & Night-Time Overthinking
When bedtime is when your brain gets loudest, anxiety counselling helps you wind down, so sleep stops being one more thing to worry about.
Anxiety With Roots Further Back
Sometimes anxiety is tangled up with older experiences, including PTSD and complex trauma. If that’s the case for you, we’ll follow that thread gently.
Life Transitions & Career Uncertainty
Breakups, moves, new jobs, or a stretch where nothing feels settled. Anxiety therapy gives you somewhere steady to think it through out loud.
Relationship Anxiety & Insecure Attachment
If closeness in relationships comes with a knot in your stomach, counselling helps you understand the pattern and find some ease in being close to people.
Overwhelm & Emotional Regulation
For the days when it all lands at once, we’ll build practical tools you can use well before you hit the wall.

How We Work In Anxiety Counselling
Everyone on our team brings something a little different into the room, and your anxiety therapist will shape the work around you.
We use approaches like:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you catch the thoughts that arrive on autopilot, look at them properly, and stop accepting every worst-case scenario at face value.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
DBT gives you something practical for the moments anxiety peaks: grounding, riding out the wave, and finding words for what you need.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
When anxiety is rooted in something older, EMDR helps your brain reprocess memories that got stuck, so they carry less charge.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT helps you carry anxious feelings without letting them steer, so more of your energy goes where you actually want it.
Narrative Therapy
Narrative work helps you step back from the story anxiety tells about you, and sort out which parts of it are true.
Solution-Focused Therapy
Sometimes you need something workable for this week. Solution-focused work starts with what’s already going right and builds from there.
Therapy doesn't switch off the worried part of you. It changes your relationship with it, so it gets a say instead of the final word.

Questions About Anxiety Counselling
What is anxiety?
Anxiety is your body’s response to a perceived threat. Your nervous system reads a situation as risky and gets you ready for it, with a faster heart rate, quicker breathing, and a mind that’s suddenly very alert.
That system is doing something useful. It becomes a problem when it gets activated for things that aren’t dangerous: an unanswered text, a work email, a social plan three weeks out. Living in that state long enough is exhausting.
What are some symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety looks different for everyone. For some, it’s a constant low-level hum of worry that never quite goes away. For others it arrives in sudden, overwhelming waves.
It might show up as:
- Racing thoughts that won’t slow down, especially at night.
- A persistent feeling that something bad is about to happen.
- Physical symptoms like a tight chest, racing heart, shallow breathing, or nausea.
- Avoiding people, places, or situations that feel too uncomfortable.
- Difficulty making decisions for fear of choosing wrong.
- Snapping at the people you love because you’re constantly on edge.
- Feeling unable to relax or enjoy things, even when life is going well.
How do I know if I have anxiety or if I'm just stressed?
Stress usually has a source and an endpoint. The deadline passes, the guests go home, and your body settles.
Anxiety tends to outlast whatever set it off, or turn up with no clear cause at all. If the worry hangs around after the situation resolves, or it’s shaping what you say yes to, how you sleep, and how your body feels, it’s worth talking to someone about.
Will counselling make my anxiety go away completely?
We won’t make promises about that. Anxiety is part of being human, and some of it is genuinely useful.
What anxiety counselling can do is change your relationship with it. Most people find the anxious thoughts lose volume, the physical symptoms ease, and the recovery time after a hard moment gets shorter. Your anxiety may still speak up. It just stops making all the decisions.
Can anxiety cause physical symptoms?
Yes, and this surprises a lot of people. Anxiety lives in the body as much as the mind.
Racing heart, tight chest, shallow breathing, nausea, stomach trouble, headaches, muscle tension, restlessness, and that buzzing feeling that won’t let you sit still are all common. Because these symptoms feel physical, many people see their doctor first and get told everything checks out. That doesn’t mean it’s in your head. It means your nervous system is asking for some support.
What's the difference between anxiety and a panic attack?
Anxiety tends to build gradually and can hang around for hours or days. A panic attack comes on fast and peaks quickly, often with intense physical symptoms: pounding heart, shortness of breath, dizziness, shaking, and a frightening sense that something is seriously wrong.
Panic attacks are genuinely awful to go through, and they’re also very treatable. Understanding what’s happening in your body during one is often the first step toward them losing their grip.
Can therapy help with social anxiety?
Yes. Social anxiety responds well to counselling, particularly when we look at both the thoughts underneath it and the avoidance that’s built up around it.
At The Nook Counselling, we’ll go at a pace that works for you. Nobody is going to send you into a room full of strangers in week two.
Do I need to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder to come in?
No. Most people who come to us have never been diagnosed with anything, and plenty aren’t sure whether what they’re dealing with even counts.
You don’t need a label to deserve support. If the worrying is taking up more space than you’d like, that’s reason enough to book a free consult.
Can counselling help if I'm already on medication for anxiety?
Yes. Plenty of our clients take medication, and it often works well alongside counselling. Medication can take the edge off the physical symptoms, and therapy gives you a chance to understand what’s driving them and build skills for the long run.
How do I find an anxiety therapist near me?
Look for therapists who name anxiety as a focus and who talk about the physical side of it too, not just the thoughts. Most offer a free consult, which is the best way to get a feel for how someone works.
If you’d like some help with that part, book a free consult with our Client Care Coordinator. She’ll ask about what you’re looking for, what you’d like support with, and what has or hasn’t worked for you in therapy before. From there, she’ll recommend the therapist on our team she thinks would be the best fit for you.
