What Can I Expect For My First Session?
Your first counselling session will be a mix of getting to know the context around what brings you in, discussing your goals, and generally building comfort in the work we will be doing together.
If you have been to counselling before, we will discuss what went well, and what you would have liked to look different. Ultimately, we want our sessions to be helpful, and this information helps us to get to know what approaches might be most beneficial for you.
If you haven’t been to counselling before, that is wonderful, and we are happy you’re here!
Personal Experience:
At The Nook Counselling, each of our team members know what it’s like to be the client in a counselling office.
Some of the words we have all agreed can describe the first session are, exciting, relieving, nerve-wracking, uncomfortable, and hopeful. We hope that our own personal experience paired with our training and genuine care for those we work with will shine through and make for a supportive atmosphere for you.
No matter how you show up, we will be read to meet you where you’re at, with water, tea, and tissue if needed.
Where We’ll Meet:
In-Person:
We have our cozy office in Coquitlam, near Coquitlam Center, that is our main spot to connect! We also have a satellite office that Rié works out of on Fridays in Pitt Meadows.
In Nature:
We offer walk and talk sessions in nature near our Coquitlam office with Arlen. He knows the nearby trails that offer a peaceful setting to connect. For these sessions, we will meet in the office and head out together for our walk.
Online:
We all offer virtual sessions for anyone in BC through our Janeapp platform.
How To Get The Most Out Of Counselling:
Be open to the process. There are no right or wrong answers. Just you, your experiences, and willingness to explore.
Try not to rush. Some of us want to come in an get a “quick fix,” and while we understand this, change can take time. That said, we always welcome:
Honest feedback. We can handle it. We want to know how you’re feeling in general, but also, around the process. If you have questions or feel like you would rather be focusing on something else, please let us know. This is a collaborative relationship and we want you to feel like this is a helpful experience.
Between sessions: if things come up that are related to what we’re working on, jot them down if you think they’ll be helpful to share. The same goes for in-session time; if you are finding the session helpful and want to remember what was said, feel free to write some notes, or ask your therapist to send you a brief reminder after session for you to remember what was discussed.
